Who are we?
History
The late Michael
Smith [photo]
of San Francisco desired to create a way for black and white men
interested in cross cultural relationships to meet. His plan was to
start an organization that would serve as a meeting point to foster
these relationships. In 1980, he placed an ad in The Advocate and San
Francisco, Chicago, Kansas City, New York and Boston responded by
establishing local chapters of Black and White Men Together (BWMT).

VISION
Black and White
Men Together - Milwaukee (BWMT-Milwaukee) is a gay, multi-racial,
multi-cultural organization established in 1981 as an outlet for social
interaction for men of all ethnic persuasions. We are committed to
fostering a better understanding of issues across color lines. We are
also committed to combating discrimination in the lesbigay community
and society at large.
A sharper focus
on this vision and on the mission of BWMT is the subject of Colin
Gibson's 2000 Manifesto for BWMT.
MISSION
To these ends, we foster a
supportive environment for interracial relationships and friendships and
engage in educational, political, cultural, and social activities as a
means of dealing with the racism, sexism, homophobia, and other
inequalities in our communities and in our lives.

- Learn

about our own and other cultures and histories
- Affirm our
sexuality
- Discover
and
become a part of a "family" and community that extends across the
country
- Join and

oneself in the local chapter and/or become a National Member
- Build new
friendships
that may last a lifetime.
Local
member James T. sums it up well:
"BWMT is a Safe Place where
being gay is not an issue, and where being interracial is not an issue."
In
short, BWMT is a home where we can be ourselves. We are a social club
as opposed to a political one, yes, but so much more than that.
