Rights Won by Unions

My husband has recently been on strike. He is a teacher at a large public school. He braved the rain and loss of income to gain improvements in the lives of children.

He is a member of a teacher’s union and I am reminded of the rights you and I have based on the actions of unions over many years.

I dug up some of these from the Daily Koss

Weekends
Paid Vacation, Sick Leave and the Minimum Wage
Social Security
Civil Rights Act/Title VII (Prohibits Employer Discrimination)
8-Hour Work Day, the 40 Hour Work Week and Overtime Pay
Worker’s Compensation (Worker’s Comp)
Unemployment Insurance
Pensions and Employer Health Care Insurance
Collective Bargaining Rights for Employees
Wrongful Termination Laws
Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
Whistleblower Protection Laws
Raises
Sexual Harassment Laws
Americans With Disabilities Act
The Right to Strike
Public Education for Children

So when you hear of states that have enacted  “Right to Work” Laws that restrict labor unions, stop and consider these rights that unions fought for.
